Layover by David Bell

Fiction – Thriller

Goodreads Summary

Joshua Fields takes the same flights every week for work. His life is a series of departures and arrivals, hotels and airports. During yet another layover, Joshua meets Morgan, a beautiful stranger with whom he feels an immediate connection. When it’s time for their flights, Morgan gets up to leave, leans over and passionately kisses Joshua, lamenting that they’ll never see each other again.

As Morgan slips away, Joshua is left feeling confused by what just happened between them. That’s when he looks up and is shocked to see Morgan’s face flashing on a nearby TV screen. He’s even more shocked when he learns the reason why–Morgan is a missing person.

What follows is a whirlwind, fast-paced journey filled with lies, deceit, and secrets to discover the truth about why Morgan is on the run. But when he finally thinks every mystery is solved, another rears its head, and Joshua’s worst enemy may be his own assumptions about those around him…

The simplest way to say it is that this was just such a mediocre thriller!

This was my first David Bell novel and I had been highly anticipating it after hearing the premise of this book and great things about his others. Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed.

I was able to get through this book no problem thanks to its general readability and short chapters. However, I would not call it a page turner. Or maybe it was a page turner with just let down after let down of what exciting thing was going to happen next. Nearly half way through and I was hoping that there was going to be some much more thrilling stuff happening. When I’m reading a thriller, I’m expecting some at least somewhat jaw dropping revelations. I mean I like to have thrilling content in my thrillers. That’s fair, right? This fell flat in that category and left me saying really? That’s it?

This book really had so much potential! I didn’t hate it and the writing wasn’t bad by any means! It was just that the storyline didn’t work for me and I had no real investment or interest in it.

This thriller may work really well for you so please don’t let me deter you from reading it. I’ve read so many thrillers and have become a bit of a thriller snob. And the beauty of books is that we all have differing thoughts and opinions on them. What doesn’t work for me may work for you and vice versa.
